Osteoarthritis, Vitamin D Deficiency.
Vitamin D, whether produced in the skin from 7-DHC or absorbed from the diet, must be activated first to 25OHD and then to its active form 1,25(OH)2D. The production of vitamin D is not enzymatic but depends on UVB. The 25-hydroxylation of vitamin D can be accomplished by a number of enzymes, but the most important appears to be CYP2R1. CYP27B1 is the only enzyme responsible for the subsequent 1α-hydroxylation to 1,25(OH)2D. The renal CYP27B1 is likely responsible for most of the circulating 1,25(OH)2D, but CYP27B1 is found in a number of other tissues where 1,25(OH)2D is likely to serve a paracrine/autocrine function.
It should be stored at room temperature away from light.
Steroid medications such as prednisone can interfere with vitamin D metabolism.
Most people do not commonly experience side effects with vitamin D, unless too much is taken. Some side effects of taking too much vitamin D include weakness, fatigue, sleepiness, headache, loss of appetite, dry mouth, metallic taste, nausea, vomiting.
