Description

Udcament is Ursodeoxycholic acid, which is a naturally-occurring bile acid and is used to dissolve gallstones that are rich in cholesterol. It is also used to improve the flow of bile in a type of liver disease called primary biliary cirrhosis.


Udcament Oral Suspension is a hepatoprotective medication. It works by reducing the amount of cholesterol in the blood and helps dissolve gallbladder stones that are composed mainly of cholesterol. It also improves liver enzymes, protects liver cells from injury caused due to toxic bile acids, and improves liver function.


Udcament is available in suspension formulation for pediatric use.
It is a drug of choice in cholestatic conditions ,it is safe and effective in neonatal jaundice and cholestasis

Composition

Each 5 ml of Udcament suspension contains:

Allergy

This medicine is not recommended for use in patients having a non-functional gall bladder or conditions like swelling or impaired contractility of the gall bladder.


Presence of calcified gallston

This medicine is not recommended for use in patients having gallstones formed due to the deposit of calcium. These stones are detectable in an x-ray.


Chronic liver disease

This medicine is not recommended for use in patients suffering from chronic liver diseases due to the risk of adverse effects.


Inflammatory bowel disease

This medicine is not recommended for use in patients having an ongoing inflammatory disease of the bowel.


Patients requiring cholecystectomy

This medicine is not recommended for use in patients who require surgery to remove the gall bladder or to remove the stones.


Type of gallstone

This medicine should be used only if the stone has high cholesterol content. Other stones formed due to calcium deposits or ones that are detectable in X-ray should not be treated with this medicine.


Liver impairment

This medicine should be used with extreme caution in patients suffering from liver impairment. Close monitoring of liver function and bilirubin levels are necessary before starting the therapy and during the course of therapy with this medicine. It is not recommended for use in patients suffering from chronic liver diseases due to the risk of adverse effects.


Time taken for stone dissolution

This medicine may take several months for dissolving the gall stone. Any complications experienced during this duration should be reported to the doctor. The likelihood of recurrence is very high if the therapy is discontinued.


Diarrhea

Any incidence of diarrhea while taking this medicine should be reported to the doctor immediately. You may require a dose adjustment if this side effect is severe and persistent.


Initial worsening of symptoms

The use of this medicine for primary biliary cirrhosis may worsen the symptoms initially. Report any such instance to the doctor as a dose adjustment may be needed in such cases.


Pregnancy

This medicine is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless absolutely necessary. All the risks and benefits should be discussed with the doctor before taking this medicine.


Breast-feeding

This medicine is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women unless absolutely necessary. All the risks and benefits should be discussed with the doctor before taking this medicine.
